Flooring Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common flooring questions about carpet, hardwood, LVP, laminate, stairs, financing and how a project with Vancouver Flooring Co. works.

Bright room with new carpet

Straight answers to the questions we hear most, from how a project starts to what goes under the floor. If yours is not here, call (360) 860-6084 or book a free in-home estimate and ask Bill directly.

Carpet

What is the best carpet for a home with pets?

There is no single answer, but durable, cleanable fibers and denser constructions tend to perform better with pets, and the cushion and backing matter too. We ask about your pets and the rooms involved before narrowing the options, and we are honest that no carpet is completely immune to accidents.

Do you offer natural or wool carpet?

Yes. Wool is a natural, renewable fiber with excellent resilience and a beautiful feel, and it is a good fit for homeowners who prefer natural materials. We will explain how it compares to synthetic fibers for your specific rooms.

Can you help with area rugs too?

Yes. Area rugs are one of our core categories. We help with size, material and placement, especially when we are also installing or refinishing the hardwood they will sit on, so the two are planned as one finished room.

Can I see carpet samples at your showroom?

Our showroom at 8720 NE Centerpointe Dr in Vancouver has limited walk-in hours, so we recommend booking a consultation. That gives us time to look at samples properly and talk through your rooms. Call (360) 860-6084 to set a time.

Is financing available for new carpet?

Financing is available through Service Finance, subject to credit approval. Programs rotate seasonally, so we share what is currently available at your consultation.

Hardwood

Should I choose solid or engineered hardwood?

It depends on the room and what is underneath it. Solid hardwood suits wood subfloors above grade and can be refinished many times. Engineered hardwood is more dimensionally stable and can go over concrete or below grade with the right preparation. We look at your specific rooms, moisture readings and plans for the space before recommending either.

Why does moisture matter so much for hardwood in Southwest Washington?

Wood expands and contracts with the moisture around it, and our wet winters and drier summers put that to work every year. Homes over crawlspaces can carry extra moisture into the subfloor. We take moisture readings and look at the crawlspace before installation so the floor goes in balanced with the house, which is what keeps it flat and tight over time.

Can you help me choose a species and color without seeing hundreds of samples?

Yes, and that is how we prefer to work. We ask about your light, your rooms, your household and your budget, then narrow the field to a short list of strong options. Consultations are by appointment, which gives us time to look at samples together rather than walking a wall of them.

Do you install hardwood in Oregon?

No. We are licensed as a contractor in Washington (license VANCOFC745D3) and work in Clark and Cowlitz counties. Oregon requires a separate contractor license, so we do not take projects there.

Is financing available for a hardwood project?

Financing is available through Service Finance, subject to credit approval. Programs change seasonally, so we share the current options during your consultation rather than quoting terms here.

Hardwood refinishing

How many times can a hardwood floor be sanded and refinished?

Solid hardwood can usually be sanded several times over its life, depending on its thickness and how much wood earlier sandings removed. Engineered hardwood depends on its wear layer; some products can be sanded once or twice and some only recoated. We check your floor before recommending a full sand.

Can you change the color of my existing hardwood?

Often, yes. Sanding to bare wood allows a new stain or a natural finish. Some species absorb stain unevenly, so we apply samples on your floor and let you see them in your own light before choosing.

Will we need to leave the house during refinishing?

It depends on how much of the house is involved, the finish you choose and your household. Some families stay and work around the affected rooms; others prefer to be away for part of the process, particularly during finishing. We plan this with you in advance so there are no surprises.

What is the difference between refinishing and a screen and recoat?

A full refinish sands the floor to bare wood, which removes scratches and allows a color change. A screen and recoat lightly abrades the existing finish and adds a fresh coat. It is less invasive and suits floors where the finish is dull but the wood itself is not damaged.

Should I refinish or replace my hardwood floor?

If the wood is sound and there is enough of it left to sand, refinishing is usually the better path. If boards are badly damaged, an engineered wear layer is exhausted, or the remodel calls for a different floor, replacement may make more sense. We will give you a straight answer after we see it.

Luxury vinyl plank

Is luxury vinyl plank waterproof?

Many LVP products are water resistant or waterproof at the plank itself, but the floor as a whole is not a sealed barrier. Water that gets under the edges can still reach the subfloor. That is why we pay close attention to moisture conditions and installation details, especially over crawlspaces and concrete.

Is LVP better than hardwood?

Neither is better in every room. LVP is often the stronger choice in kitchens, laundry rooms and busy family spaces with pets. Hardwood offers warmth, character and the ability to be refinished over decades. We help you decide room by room.

How do I compare LVP products?

Look at the wear layer, the core construction, the locking system and the manufacturer's installation requirements, not just the look. We explain these in plain terms during your consultation and narrow the field to a few well-built options.

Can LVP go over my existing floor?

Sometimes, if the existing floor is flat, sound and firmly attached, and the manufacturer allows it. Often the better long-term result comes from removing the old floor and preparing the subfloor properly. We assess this on site before recommending either approach.

Laminate

Is laminate waterproof?

Some laminates are designed to resist surface water for a period of time, but laminate is generally less tolerant of standing water than luxury vinyl plank. We take that into account when recommending it for kitchens, entries or laundry rooms.

Laminate or LVP: which is better for dogs?

Laminate usually has a harder, more scratch-resistant surface, while LVP handles water better and is softer underfoot. The best choice depends on the room and your household. We help you weigh both.

Why do some laminate floors sound hollow?

Hollow sound usually comes from an uneven subfloor, the wrong underlayment or a thinner product. Proper preparation and the right underlayment go a long way toward a quieter, more solid-feeling floor.

Can laminate be refinished?

No. Laminate's wear surface cannot be sanded and refinished like hardwood. A well-made laminate is designed to hold up well for its lifespan, and individual planks can sometimes be replaced if one is damaged.

Can I buy laminate from you and install it myself?

Our work is built around complete projects, from selection and planning through installation and the final walkthrough, because that is where we can take responsibility for the result. If you are planning a remodel and want laminate installed as part of it, we would be glad to help. Consultations are by appointment at (360) 860-6084.

Stairs and trim

Can my stairs be done to match new hardwood floors?

Usually, yes. We plan matching treads and nosings as part of the flooring order, or refinish existing wood stairs alongside the floors so the color and sheen match. We look at the existing stair structure before recommending an approach.

What is the difference between a wrapped and a waterfall carpet stair?

A wrapped style follows the shape of each nosing for a tailored, fitted look. A waterfall style drops the carpet straight over the nosing to the next tread. Both are common; the right one depends on the shape of your stairs and the look you prefer.

Should I add a runner to hardwood stairs?

A runner adds grip, comfort and quiet, and it protects the center of each tread where wear concentrates. Many homeowners like the combination of wood edges with a soft center. We can help choose the material, width and pattern.

Do new floors mean new baseboards?

Not always. Sometimes existing baseboards can be carefully removed and reinstalled; sometimes new trim suits the room or the new floor height better. We assess this during planning so it is part of the scope, not a surprise.

Floor removal and subfloor prep

Is floor removal included in my flooring project?

Removal is planned as part of your project, and we spell out in the scope what is being removed, how it will be handled and what preparation the subfloor needs. That way the full picture is clear before work begins.

What if you find something unexpected under my old floor?

It happens, especially in older homes or homes that have been remodeled before. If we find damage, moisture, another layer of flooring or anything else that affects the plan, we stop, show you, explain the options and agree on the next step together.

Can my old flooring contain asbestos?

Some older resilient flooring and adhesives can. If we suspect older materials, we recommend testing before they are disturbed. A positive result means removal is handled by a licensed abatement professional before flooring work continues.

How much dust should I expect?

Removal does create dust and noise. We plan containment for the affected rooms, protect pathways and vents, and walk you through what the day will look like so you can plan around it.

Commercial flooring

What size commercial projects do you take on?

We focus on small commercial and office spaces such as professional suites, studios and smaller offices. For large-scale or multi-building projects, a dedicated commercial flooring contractor is usually the better fit, and we will tell you that honestly.

Can you work around our business hours?

We plan the schedule around how your space is used and phase the work where possible to limit disruption. We discuss what is realistic for your project during planning rather than making blanket promises.

What flooring do you recommend for a small office?

Many offices use carpet or modular carpet squares in work areas for comfort and sound control, with a durable hard surface or hardwood in reception and client-facing areas. The right mix depends on your traffic, maintenance and the impression you want to make.

Can we see flooring options before deciding?

Yes. Our showroom at 8720 NE Centerpointe Dr, Suite 209 in Vancouver has limited walk-in hours, so we recommend booking a consultation. That gives us time to look at options against your space, traffic and schedule. Call (360) 860-6084.

Do you work on commercial projects in Portland?

No. We are licensed in Washington and work in Clark and Cowlitz counties. Oregon requires a separate contractor license, so we do not take projects there.

Common questions

How does a flooring project with Vancouver Flooring Co begin?

It begins with a conversation, then a consultation by appointment. We ask which areas of the home you are thinking about, what type of flooring you have in mind, and what matters most to you about the project, and that goes to our Project Coordinator before anyone meets. The consultation itself is where we look at the rooms, measure, talk through how you live in the space and narrow the options down to a few that genuinely suit it.

What types of flooring do you offer?

Our focus is carpet, hardwood (both new installation and refinishing existing floors) and area rugs. We also offer luxury vinyl plank and laminate where they are the right fit for a room, and natural and eco-friendly options for homeowners who want them. The range is curated on purpose: a short list of strong, appropriate choices is easier to decide between than a wall of everything.

Can I visit the showroom?

Yes, at 8720 NE Centerpointe Dr, Suite 209 in Vancouver, though walk-in hours there are limited. Consultations are available much more broadly by appointment, so the simplest route is to call or text (360) 860-6084 and set a time that works for you. That way the visit is spent on your project rather than on browsing.

What kinds of projects are you best suited to?

Residential remodel projects where the floor is part of making the home better to live in: a main floor, bedrooms and stairs, a whole level, or hardwood brought back to life. We plan the whole project rather than just the product, so we tend to be a good fit for homeowners who value guidance and careful planning. We are less suited to very small jobs, product-only purchases or work where price is the only deciding factor, and we would rather say so early.

What happens between choosing a floor and installation day?

Planning. We look at the whole project, including what is coming up, the condition of what lies underneath, transitions between rooms, stairs, furniture and timing, and we set expectations with you before installation starts. Most of the uncertainty people feel about flooring comes from surprises on the day, and the planning is how we take those out of it. We stay accountable from selection through completion.

Is financing available?

Yes. We offer financing through Service Finance, subject to credit approval. Several programs are available and they change through the year, so ask us what is currently offered and we will walk you through it. We do not quote rates or payments on the website because they depend on the program and on approval.

What areas do you serve?

Clark County and Cowlitz County in Washington, including Vancouver, Camas, Washougal, Battle Ground, Ridgefield, La Center, Brush Prairie, Yacolt, Woodland, Kalama, Kelso, Longview and Castle Rock. We are licensed as a Washington contractor (VANCOFC745D3). Oregon requires a separate contractor licence, so we do not take on projects across the river.
