Commercial flooring in Kalama

Built for Kalama homes.

Kalama was founded by the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1870, briefly boomed to around 5,000 people and served as the Cowlitz County seat until 1922. Today it has 2,959 residents, a working port, and a historic downtown with five antique shops. It also rises from the Columbia's edge to more than 1,100 feet. For flooring in Kalama, WA that combination is useful to think about: houses with stairs and changes of level, and rooms that often hold older furniture worth showing off.

Kalama exists because of the railroad

General John W. Sprague chose the site for the Northern Pacific in March 1870, and the town grew to roughly 5,000 people before the railroad moved its headquarters to Tacoma in 1874. Kalama was the Cowlitz County seat from 1872 to 1922 and a railroad ferry terminus to Oregon until bridges opened near Portland in 1909. The 2020 census counted 2,959 residents, up 26.2 percent from 2010.

The town sits on a narrow strip of floodplain hemmed in by the Coast and Cascade ranges, about 75 river miles from the Pacific, and its elevation runs from sea level to 1,125 feet. The Port of Kalama is a significant Columbia River terminal for dry bulk cargo, and Marine Park runs along the river with a paved trail and the totem poles, one of them carved from a 700-year-old red cedar for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. Downtown has five antique stores, the largest being First Street Antiques.

Two things follow for flooring.

The first is terrain. Where a town climbs from river level to over a thousand feet in a short distance, houses tend to work with the slope. Whatever the style of your home, a hillside site often means more stairs, more changes of level and sometimes a lower floor partly set into the ground. Stairs are one of the most visible parts of a flooring project and one of the most demanding to install well, so we plan treads, risers, nosings and any runner as part of the whole job rather than an add-on. Lower levels set into a slope deserve a moisture check before we suggest wood.

The second is what is in the rooms. A town with this many antique shops is a reminder that floors are a backdrop. If you are living with older furniture, a refinished hardwood floor in a calm, low-sheen finish, or a warm-toned wood that does not compete with the pieces, usually serves the room better than something busy or high-gloss. Area rugs matter here too: a well-chosen wool rug in the right size anchors a seating group, protects the floor and ties old and new furniture together. We are glad to help with size, construction and placement, not just the floor itself.

Kalama is part of our Cowlitz County area, north of our Vancouver showroom on I-5. Consultations are by appointment, and the full project, from removal to the last piece of trim, is planned before work begins.

If you are not sure where to start, start with the room you use most. A refinished living-room floor and one good rug often change how a house feels more than replacing every floor at once, and the rest can follow on a plan rather than all in one go.

What homeowners say

  • "I am so happy with my floors, they are beautiful! They take pride in their work. They showed up when they said they would and cleaned while they worked. All that is left were absolutely beautiful floors. I am very pleased and thankful for how good of a job they did! I will work with them again if I ever need to."

  • "Bill from Vancouver Flooring Co., delivered a great carpet (Shaw) at a reasonable price. Was top notch communicable throughout the project and was always there to answer my questions. The crew he had do the install (Kevin and his crew) were just an extension of what Bill delivered. No hiccups and delivered on time. Can't say enough about Vancouver Flooring Co. It's so nice, especially now days to have a company with this integrity provide a 5 star install from beginning to end. Would highly recommend Vancouver Flooring Co. and Bill for all of your flooring needs."

Kalama FAQs

Commercial flooring in Kalama, questions

Our Kalama home is on a slope with a lot of stairs. Can stairs be done at the same time as the floors?

Yes, and they should be planned together. Stairs set the finish for the rest of the house, so we choose treads, risers, nosings or carpet alongside the main floors so the colours, profiles and transitions line up.

We have antique furniture. What kind of floor and rug suits it?

Usually a calm floor: a refinished hardwood in a low-sheen finish, or a wood tone that sits quietly behind the furniture. A properly sized wool area rug under the main seating group adds warmth and protects the floor. We can help you choose the rug size and construction as well as the floor.

Do you serve Kalama from Vancouver?

Yes. Kalama is part of our Cowlitz County service area. Consultations are by appointment.

What size commercial projects do you take on?

We focus on small commercial and office spaces such as professional suites, studios and smaller offices. For large-scale or multi-building projects, a dedicated commercial flooring contractor is usually the better fit, and we will tell you that honestly.

Can you work around our business hours?

We plan the schedule around how your space is used and phase the work where possible to limit disruption. We discuss what is realistic for your project during planning rather than making blanket promises.

What flooring do you recommend for a small office?

Many offices use carpet or modular carpet squares in work areas for comfort and sound control, with a durable hard surface or hardwood in reception and client-facing areas. The right mix depends on your traffic, maintenance and the impression you want to make.
