Hardwood installation in Kelso

Built for Kelso homes.

Kelso was founded in 1847 by the Scottish surveyor Peter Crawford, who named it after his home town, and it has been the Cowlitz County seat for generations. It is also a town that knows its ground. Ash and sediment came down the Cowlitz after Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980, and the slow Aldercrest-Banyon landslide of 1998 eventually destroyed 129 houses. Flooring in Kelso, WA should start below the floor: with level, with structure, and with an honest look at the house before anything is chosen.

Kelso sits on the Cowlitz River directly opposite Longview. Peter Crawford established it in 1847, the original plat was filed in October 1884 and the city incorporated in 1889. The 2020 census counted 12,720 residents. For decades its identity came from the river; in 1956 the chamber of commerce coined the slogan Smelt Capital of the World.

The river and the hills have also given Kelso a more serious history with the ground under its houses, and that is the reason this page reads differently from our others.

In 1980, Mount St. Helens, 24 miles away, deposited large amounts of volcanic ash on the area, both from the air and carried down the rivers. In March 1998 the Aldercrest-Banyon landslide began shifting the foundations of 64 homes. It kept moving, eventually destroyed 129 houses and was declared a federal disaster in October 1998, and it is described as the second-worst landslide disaster by cost in the United States.

Most Kelso homes were never near that slide, and we are not suggesting a floor should be chosen out of fear. But a town with this history is a good place to practise a habit we follow everywhere: check the structure before you choose the surface.

In practice that means a few things

We check how flat and level the floor actually is across each room, not just whether it looks right. Rigid products such as luxury vinyl plank and laminate need a flat base, and they will show every dip in a subfloor that has moved. Hardwood is more forgiving of small irregularities but less forgiving of moisture, so in a house near the river we want to know how the crawlspace behaves through a wet winter. And if we find signs of real structural movement, such as new cracks, doors that have started to bind or floors that slope noticeably, we will tell you plainly and suggest that a structural professional look before any flooring money is spent.

Once the structure is understood, the choices open up. Carpet is often the most comfortable and forgiving answer for bedrooms and stairs, especially in older houses where a little unevenness is part of the character. A refinished original wood floor, where one exists, can be a better result than anything new. For kitchens and entries, a well-installed plank over a properly prepared subfloor is practical and durable.

Kelso is part of our Cowlitz County area, up I-5 from our Vancouver showroom. Consultations are by appointment, and preparation, removal and installation are planned together as one project.

What homeowners say

  • "I am so happy with my floors, they are beautiful! They take pride in their work. They showed up when they said they would and cleaned while they worked. All that is left were absolutely beautiful floors. I am very pleased and thankful for how good of a job they did! I will work with them again if I ever need to."

  • "Bill from Vancouver Flooring Co., delivered a great carpet (Shaw) at a reasonable price. Was top notch communicable throughout the project and was always there to answer my questions. The crew he had do the install (Kevin and his crew) were just an extension of what Bill delivered. No hiccups and delivered on time. Can't say enough about Vancouver Flooring Co. It's so nice, especially now days to have a company with this integrity provide a 5 star install from beginning to end. Would highly recommend Vancouver Flooring Co. and Bill for all of your flooring needs."

Kelso FAQs

Hardwood installation in Kelso, questions

Our Kelso house has floors that are not quite level. Can we still install LVP?

Possibly, but the subfloor has to be addressed first. Rigid plank products need a flat base, so we measure across each room and plan any levelling as part of the job. If the unevenness looks like ongoing movement rather than old settling, we will recommend having the structure looked at before installing anything.

Is Kelso covered as well as Longview?

Yes. Kelso and Longview face each other across the Cowlitz River, and both are part of our Cowlitz County service area. Consultations are by appointment, and we plan removal, subfloor preparation and installation together so the project runs as one job.

Is carpet a sensible choice in an older Kelso home?

Often it is the most comfortable and forgiving one, particularly for bedrooms and stairs. A good carpet over the right cushion tolerates slight irregularities that would show through a rigid floor, and it adds warmth and quiet. We help you choose a construction and fibre that will wear well in the rooms you use most.

Should I choose solid or engineered hardwood?

It depends on the room and what is underneath it. Solid hardwood suits wood subfloors above grade and can be refinished many times. Engineered hardwood is more dimensionally stable and can go over concrete or below grade with the right preparation. We look at your specific rooms, moisture readings and plans for the space before recommending either.

Why does moisture matter so much for hardwood in Southwest Washington?

Wood expands and contracts with the moisture around it, and our wet winters and drier summers put that to work every year. Homes over crawlspaces can carry extra moisture into the subfloor. We take moisture readings and look at the crawlspace before installation so the floor goes in balanced with the house, which is what keeps it flat and tight over time.

Can you help me choose a species and color without seeing hundreds of samples?

Yes, and that is how we prefer to work. We ask about your light, your rooms, your household and your budget, then narrow the field to a short list of strong options. Consultations are by appointment, which gives us time to look at samples together rather than walking a wall of them.
