Hardwood refinishing & sanding in La Center

Built for La Center homes.

La Center began in the 1870s as a steamboat landing on the East Fork Lewis River and incorporated in 1909. It is still small, with 3,424 residents at the 2020 census, all of them counted as rural, and its oldest building, Highland Lutheran Church, dates to 1887. Homes here tend to come with land, gravel drives and working entries, and that shapes flooring in La Center, WA more than any trend does: floors need to handle what comes in from outside while still feeling like home.

La Center grew up as a navigation point on the East Fork Lewis River in the 1870s, when steamboats were the practical way to move people and goods in this part of Clark County. It was incorporated on 27 August 1909. Highland Lutheran Church, built in 1887, is described as one of the oldest houses of worship in Washington.

The town has grown steadily without losing its scale. The population was 2,800 in 2010 and 3,424 in 2020, with a 2021 estimate of 3,795, across about 2.6 square miles, and the 2020 census counted every resident as living in a rural area. It has a long-standing local identity around its three cardrooms, the New Phoenix, Last Frontier and Fortune, and since April 2017 the Cowlitz Indian Tribe's ilani Casino Resort has operated nearby, served by a new $32 million I-5 interchange.

For flooring, the rural character matters more than any of that. A home on acreage is used differently from a house on a city lot, and the floors should be chosen for how you actually live.

  1. Where does everyone come in?

In many rural homes the main entry is not the front door but a side or back door from the garage, the shop or the yard. That is where grit, mud and water arrive, and it is where a durable, easy-to-clean surface does the most good. A quality luxury vinyl plank or laminate rated for the traffic, paired with a washable runner or a proper entry mat, protects everything beyond it.

  2. Where do you want comfort?

The rest of the house can be chosen for warmth and quiet. Carpet in bedrooms and family rooms, a refinished or new hardwood floor in the main living space, and area rugs to soften and define rooms are all well suited to a home that is lived in rather than shown.

  3. How do the floors meet?

In rural homes that have been added to over the years, floor heights often vary from one part of the house to another. Transitions need to be planned, not improvised, so they are safe to walk across and look intentional.

  4. What is underneath?

Older farmhouses and homes that have been extended may have more than one type of subfloor, and sometimes more than one layer of old flooring. Removal and preparation are part of the plan from the start, so the new floor goes down on a sound, flat base.

La Center is a straightforward drive north of our Vancouver showroom on I-5. Consultations are by appointment, and we plan each project as a whole, including removal, stairs and trim.

What homeowners say

  • "I am so happy with my floors, they are beautiful! They take pride in their work. They showed up when they said they would and cleaned while they worked. All that is left were absolutely beautiful floors. I am very pleased and thankful for how good of a job they did! I will work with them again if I ever need to."

  • "Bill from Vancouver Flooring Co., delivered a great carpet (Shaw) at a reasonable price. Was top notch communicable throughout the project and was always there to answer my questions. The crew he had do the install (Kevin and his crew) were just an extension of what Bill delivered. No hiccups and delivered on time. Can't say enough about Vancouver Flooring Co. It's so nice, especially now days to have a company with this integrity provide a 5 star install from beginning to end. Would highly recommend Vancouver Flooring Co. and Bill for all of your flooring needs."

La Center FAQs

Hardwood refinishing & sanding in La Center, questions

We live on acreage outside La Center and most traffic comes through the back door. What should go there?

Choose the entry floor for durability and the rest of the house for comfort. A quality luxury vinyl plank or laminate handles mud, grit and wet boots well, and a washable runner catches most of it before it travels further. That lets you choose carpet, hardwood or rugs for the living spaces with far less worry.

Is La Center within your service area?

Yes. La Center is in north Clark County, a straightforward drive up I-5 from our Vancouver showroom, and it is part of our regular area along with Ridgefield and Woodland. The showroom keeps limited walk-in hours, so the best start is a consultation by appointment.

Our older La Center farmhouse has different floor heights between rooms. Can that be handled?

Yes. We assess the subfloors and existing layers during the consultation, then plan removal, levelling where needed and the right transition profiles so the change in height is safe and looks deliberate rather than patched.

How many times can a hardwood floor be sanded and refinished?

Solid hardwood can usually be sanded several times over its life, depending on its thickness and how much wood earlier sandings removed. Engineered hardwood depends on its wear layer; some products can be sanded once or twice and some only recoated. We check your floor before recommending a full sand.

Can you change the color of my existing hardwood?

Often, yes. Sanding to bare wood allows a new stain or a natural finish. Some species absorb stain unevenly, so we apply samples on your floor and let you see them in your own light before choosing.

Will we need to leave the house during refinishing?

It depends on how much of the house is involved, the finish you choose and your household. Some families stay and work around the affected rooms; others prefer to be away for part of the process, particularly during finishing. We plan this with you in advance so there are no surprises.
