Laminate in Washougal

Built for Washougal homes.

Washougal calls itself the Gateway to the Gorge, and it has made wool since a mill opened here in 1910 and was taken over by Pendleton Woolen Mills two years later. It is also the southernmost incorporated place in Washington, sitting at the west end of the Columbia River Gorge where cold winter winds are drawn toward its mouth. Both facts are useful when choosing flooring in Washougal, WA: one points to natural fibres underfoot, the other to how wood behaves when the heat is running.

Joseph E. C. Durgin established the townsite in 1880, and Washougal incorporated in November 1908, the same year the railroad arrived. In 1910 a woollen mill opened, and Pendleton Woolen Mills acquired it two years later, giving the town an industrial identity it still has. The city sits 18 miles east of Vancouver on the north bank of the Columbia, and the 2020 census counted 17,039 residents.

Wool is a good place to start a flooring conversation here. It is one of the natural, renewable options we like to put in front of clients who care about what their home is made of. Wool carpet and wool area rugs are naturally resilient, they hide soil well, they are warm underfoot, and they age gracefully when they are made and installed properly. They also cost more than synthetics, so we will be honest about where they are worth it, typically bedrooms, stairs and a living-room rug, and where a well-made synthetic is the more sensible choice.

The other local fact is the wind. Pressure differences between the east and west sides of the Cascades turn the Gorge into a wind tunnel, and in winter they draw very cold east winds toward its western mouth. Washougal sits right there.

For flooring, cold, dry outside air matters mainly through what happens indoors. When the heating runs hard through an east-wind spell, indoor humidity drops, and wood floors give up moisture and shrink. Small seasonal gaps between hardwood boards are normal; large ones usually mean the wood was installed too wet or the house swings more than it should. We address that in three ways: letting the wood acclimate in your home before installation, recommending engineered hardwood where the house swings widely, and suggesting a sensible indoor humidity range so the floor stays stable through the winter.

Entries deserve attention too

Rain and grit come through the door with everyone who has been out on the river trails or in the parks, Hathaway, Beaver and Campen Creek among them. A durable floor inside the door, with a quality rug or runner to catch the worst of it, protects whatever you choose for the rest of the house.

None of this needs to complicate the project

It simply means asking a few local questions early, about wind exposure, heating, how the house is used, and building the answer into the choice of product and the installation plan.

Washougal is a short drive east of our Vancouver showroom along the Columbia. Consultations are by appointment, and we plan the whole job, including removal, stairs and trim.

What homeowners say

  • "I am so happy with my floors, they are beautiful! They take pride in their work. They showed up when they said they would and cleaned while they worked. All that is left were absolutely beautiful floors. I am very pleased and thankful for how good of a job they did! I will work with them again if I ever need to."

  • "Bill from Vancouver Flooring Co., delivered a great carpet (Shaw) at a reasonable price. Was top notch communicable throughout the project and was always there to answer my questions. The crew he had do the install (Kevin and his crew) were just an extension of what Bill delivered. No hiccups and delivered on time. Can't say enough about Vancouver Flooring Co. It's so nice, especially now days to have a company with this integrity provide a 5 star install from beginning to end. Would highly recommend Vancouver Flooring Co. and Bill for all of your flooring needs."

Washougal FAQs

Laminate in Washougal, questions

We get strong east winds in winter. Will hardwood gap?

Some seasonal movement is normal in any wood floor. Washougal's position at the mouth of the Gorge means cold, dry winter winds and heating systems working hard, so indoor air can get very dry. Proper acclimation, sensible humidity indoors and, in some homes, engineered rather than solid hardwood keep that movement small and even.

Is wool carpet worth the extra cost?

In the right rooms, often yes. Wool is natural, resilient and comfortable, and it wears handsomely in bedrooms, on stairs and as an area rug. In a damp mudroom or a room with heavy spill risk, a well-made synthetic may be the better choice. We will show you both and help you decide room by room.

Do you serve Washougal and the Gorge?

We serve Washougal as part of east Clark County. We are licensed in Washington only, so we do not take projects across the river in Oregon.

Is laminate waterproof?

Some laminates are designed to resist surface water for a period of time, but laminate is generally less tolerant of standing water than luxury vinyl plank. We take that into account when recommending it for kitchens, entries or laundry rooms.

Laminate or LVP: which is better for dogs?

Laminate usually has a harder, more scratch-resistant surface, while LVP handles water better and is softer underfoot. The best choice depends on the room and your household. We help you weigh both.

Why do some laminate floors sound hollow?

Hollow sound usually comes from an uneven subfloor, the wrong underlayment or a thinner product. Proper preparation and the right underlayment go a long way toward a quieter, more solid-feeling floor.
