Laminate in Woodland

Built for Woodland homes.

Woodland straddles the Clark and Cowlitz county line on the Lewis River, and the river has written much of its history. The 1948 flood destroyed Hulda Klager's lilac gardens, since restored as a historic landmark, and in February 1996 the North Fork Lewis River produced most of the residential evacuations in the region. For flooring in Woodland, WA, that history makes two questions worth asking early: how close is the house to the water, and how would a floor cope if it ever got wet.

Woodland took its name from the farm of Christopher Columbus Bozarth's father and the wooded country around it, and was incorporated on 27 March 1906. The city straddles Clark and Cowlitz counties, with most of it and most residents on the Cowlitz side. The 2020 census counted 6,531 people, up 18.6 percent from 2010. Planter's Days, first held in 1922, is described as the longest continuously running civic celebration in Washington.

The Lewis River is the constant. Hulda Klager, the Lilac Lady, hybridised lilac varieties here; her gardens were destroyed in the 1948 flood and later restored, and they are now maintained as a state and National Historic Landmark. The dike that created Horseshoe Lake and the bridges where I-5 now crosses the Lewis were both begun in 1940. In February 1996 extended rain and early snowmelt brought the North Fork Lewis River into the town, most of the region's residential evacuations happened in Woodland, the damage in town falling mostly on the northeast residential section, and President Clinton visited on 14 February, landing at the high school football field.

That history does not mean every Woodland home is at risk, and we would not frame a flooring choice around fear. It does mean water is worth discussing plainly, especially for homes in low-lying parts of town.

Here is how we think about it.

Know where you are. If your home is in a mapped flood area or has taken water before, that changes what we recommend for the lowest level. Solid hardwood is beautiful but does not recover well from standing water. A good luxury vinyl plank on the lower level tolerates water far better, and carpet can be planned as a replaceable layer rather than a permanent one.

Look underneath

Many older homes near the river sit over crawlspaces, and how the crawlspace handles winter rain affects any wood floor above it. We check moisture before recommending hardwood.

Plan removal properly

Where floors have been through water in the past, removal is where the history shows itself: old adhesive, stained subfloor panels, earlier patches. We include careful removal and subfloor assessment in the plan so the new floor goes down on a sound base.

Choose upstairs with more freedom

On upper floors and in homes on higher ground, the usual priorities return: comfort, appearance and how long the floor will last. Carpet in the bedrooms, a refinished or new hardwood floor in the living spaces and well-chosen area rugs are all open choices.

Woodland is a short drive north of our Vancouver showroom on I-5. Consultations are by appointment, and the whole project is planned from removal to trim.

What homeowners say

  • "I am so happy with my floors, they are beautiful! They take pride in their work. They showed up when they said they would and cleaned while they worked. All that is left were absolutely beautiful floors. I am very pleased and thankful for how good of a job they did! I will work with them again if I ever need to."

  • "Bill from Vancouver Flooring Co., delivered a great carpet (Shaw) at a reasonable price. Was top notch communicable throughout the project and was always there to answer my questions. The crew he had do the install (Kevin and his crew) were just an extension of what Bill delivered. No hiccups and delivered on time. Can't say enough about Vancouver Flooring Co. It's so nice, especially now days to have a company with this integrity provide a 5 star install from beginning to end. Would highly recommend Vancouver Flooring Co. and Bill for all of your flooring needs."

Woodland FAQs

Laminate in Woodland, questions

Our Woodland home is close to the Lewis River. What flooring makes sense on the ground floor?

On a lower level that could see water, we generally steer away from solid hardwood and toward a quality luxury vinyl plank, which tolerates moisture much better. Carpet can work in some rooms if it is treated as a layer you could replace. Upstairs and on higher ground, the choice is far more open.

We are on the Cowlitz County side of Woodland. Is that covered?

Yes. Woodland sits across the Clark and Cowlitz county line, and we serve both sides. Consultations are by appointment.

Can you remove old flooring that has been through water damage before?

Yes. Floor removal and demolition are part of our services, and on homes with a history of water we pay particular attention to the subfloor once the old floor is up, so the new one goes down on a sound, dry base.

Is laminate waterproof?

Some laminates are designed to resist surface water for a period of time, but laminate is generally less tolerant of standing water than luxury vinyl plank. We take that into account when recommending it for kitchens, entries or laundry rooms.

Laminate or LVP: which is better for dogs?

Laminate usually has a harder, more scratch-resistant surface, while LVP handles water better and is softer underfoot. The best choice depends on the room and your household. We help you weigh both.

Why do some laminate floors sound hollow?

Hollow sound usually comes from an uneven subfloor, the wrong underlayment or a thinner product. Proper preparation and the right underlayment go a long way toward a quieter, more solid-feeling floor.
