Laminate in Yacolt

Built for Yacolt homes.

Yacolt sits at 709 feet in the forested northeast of Clark County, about 30 miles from Vancouver, and at the 2020 census all 1,668 residents were counted as rural. Its name, from the Klickitat for haunted place, is attached to the 1902 Yacolt Burn, which swept more than 238,000 acres and is now the Yacolt Burn State Forest. Homes here are country homes, often on land at the forest edge, and flooring in Yacolt, WA should be chosen for that life: durable at the door, warm everywhere else.

Yacolt's name comes from the Klickitat word Yahkohtl, usually translated as haunted place or place of spirits. The town was incorporated on 31 July 1908 and sits at an elevation of 709 feet, roughly 30 miles northeast of Vancouver. It is small: 1,668 residents at the 2020 census, every one of them counted as rural.

The name is best known for the fire. Between 8 and 12 September 1902 the Yacolt Burn swept 238,920 acres across Clark, Cowlitz and Skamania counties, killed at least 65 people and is described as the largest fire in Washington's history. The burned country became the Yacolt Burn State Forest. Today the heritage Chelatchie Prairie Railroad runs through the area, including a well-known Christmas train, and Yacolt Falls and Moulton Station lie in the surrounding forest.

Yacolt is the most remote town on our list, and we would rather say plainly what that means for a flooring project than pretend it is the same as a job in central Vancouver.

Planning matters more

Because of the distance, we make the most of the consultation: measuring every room in scope, looking at stairs, transitions and what is under the existing floor, and discussing removal, so the installation can be scheduled in full rather than in several trips.

The entry floor is the most important floor in the house. Forest-edge and rural properties bring in mud, needles, grit and wet gear, often through a side or back door rather than the front. A durable surface there, such as a quality luxury vinyl plank or laminate, with a washable runner or proper entry mat, protects everything else.

Warmth wins in the living spaces

In bedrooms and family rooms, carpet over a good cushion is warm and quiet. Natural fibres such as wool suit country homes well and wear handsomely. If you prefer wood, a well-finished hardwood floor with area rugs in the main seating areas gives you both warmth and a floor that can be refinished years from now.

Check below before you choose. Many rural homes sit over crawlspaces, and some have been added to over time. We check moisture and subfloor condition before recommending hardwood, and plan any levelling or transition work as part of the project.

Think about the long view

A house you plan to stay in for many years justifies spending on the things you cannot see, such as cushion under carpet and preparation under plank or wood, because those are what decide how a floor looks a decade from now.

Consultations for Yacolt are by appointment, and we schedule the whole project, from removal and preparation through stairs and trim, before work begins.

What homeowners say

  • "I am so happy with my floors, they are beautiful! They take pride in their work. They showed up when they said they would and cleaned while they worked. All that is left were absolutely beautiful floors. I am very pleased and thankful for how good of a job they did! I will work with them again if I ever need to."

  • "Bill from Vancouver Flooring Co., delivered a great carpet (Shaw) at a reasonable price. Was top notch communicable throughout the project and was always there to answer my questions. The crew he had do the install (Kevin and his crew) were just an extension of what Bill delivered. No hiccups and delivered on time. Can't say enough about Vancouver Flooring Co. It's so nice, especially now days to have a company with this integrity provide a 5 star install from beginning to end. Would highly recommend Vancouver Flooring Co. and Bill for all of your flooring needs."

Yacolt FAQs

Laminate in Yacolt, questions

Is Yacolt too far out for you?

No. Yacolt is in Clark County and within our service area. Because it is about 30 miles from Vancouver, we plan carefully: a thorough consultation by appointment, then a single, well-scheduled installation rather than several short visits.

What flooring works best for a rural home near the forest?

Split the house by use. A durable plank or laminate at the main entry handles mud and wet gear, while carpet, wool or hardwood with area rugs keeps the living spaces warm and comfortable. We will help you decide where each belongs.

Do you remove the old flooring as part of the job?

Yes. Floor removal and demolition are part of our services, and on rural homes it is often where we find the subfloor details that shape the rest of the plan.

Is laminate waterproof?

Some laminates are designed to resist surface water for a period of time, but laminate is generally less tolerant of standing water than luxury vinyl plank. We take that into account when recommending it for kitchens, entries or laundry rooms.

Laminate or LVP: which is better for dogs?

Laminate usually has a harder, more scratch-resistant surface, while LVP handles water better and is softer underfoot. The best choice depends on the room and your household. We help you weigh both.

Why do some laminate floors sound hollow?

Hollow sound usually comes from an uneven subfloor, the wrong underlayment or a thinner product. Proper preparation and the right underlayment go a long way toward a quieter, more solid-feeling floor.
