Stairs & trim
Stairs & trim are where a flooring project either looks finished or looks almost finished. Treads, risers, nosings, landings, baseboards and transitions are small in square footage and large in effect, and they are the details most likely to be overlooked in a quote. We plan them from the first measurement so the stairs and edges match the floor you chose and the house it is going into.
Why the staircase deserves its own conversation
In many homes, the staircase is the first thing you see when you walk in the front door. It connects the floors of the house visually as well as physically, and it is the place where the most effort meets the least room for error. Every step is a separate cut, a separate fit and a separate transition. A floor that looks beautiful in the living room can be let down by a staircase that does not quite match it.
That is why we do not treat stairs as an add-on. When a project includes stairs, we look at them on the first visit, measure them individually, and talk about how they should relate to the floors at the top and the bottom. The same goes for baseboards, shoe molding and the transitions between rooms. These finishing pieces are what make a project feel complete, and they are part of what we mean by planning the whole project, not just the product.

If your stairs are part of a larger flooring project, they belong in the plan from the start. That is where they come out best.
Carpeted, hardwood and the space between
Carpeted stairs
Carpeted stairs are quieter, softer and more forgiving underfoot, which many families with young children or older pets prefer. The main choice is the installation style. A cap-and-band or wrapped style follows the shape of each nosing for a tailored look. A waterfall style runs the carpet straight down over the nosing to the tread below, which is simpler but reads differently. We help you choose based on the stair shape and the look you want.
Hardwood treads and risers
Hardwood stairs carry a hardwood floor all the way through the house, and they are often the centerpiece of an entry. Depending on the existing structure, this might mean new treads and risers, stair nosing matched to the flooring, or refinishing existing wood stairs alongside the floors. Painted risers with stained treads are a popular, classic combination that we can talk through with you.
Runners
A stair runner over hardwood treads gives you the look of wood with the comfort, grip and quiet of carpet down the center. It also protects the part of each tread that wears fastest. Because area rugs and carpet are core to what we do, runners are a natural fit, and we help choose the material, width and pattern so they suit the floors on either end.
Baseboards, shoe molding and transitions
When old flooring comes out, the trim often needs attention too. Baseboards may need to come off and go back, or new ones may suit the room better. Shoe molding or quarter round covers the expansion space many floors require, and transition pieces handle doorways, changes in height and the meeting point between different materials. Each one is small. Together they decide whether the job looks complete.
Laminate and vinyl stairs are done the same careful way: each tread and riser is cut to fit, with matching stair nosings so the staircase reads as a continuation of the new floor rather than an afterthought. Laminate stairs give a hardwood look at a lower price, and vinyl stairs carry the water resistance of luxury vinyl plank up from an entry or basement.

Measured one step at a time
No two steps are quite the same
Even in a newer home, treads vary slightly in depth and width, and older staircases can vary considerably. Winders, open sides, returns and landings each add complexity. We measure every step rather than working from an average, which is what lets the quote reflect the real job and the installation fit the stairs you actually have.
Matching the floor
Stair nosings and treads need to match the floor at the top and bottom in color, sheen and profile, or the difference will be noticeable every time you walk past. When hardwood is being installed, we plan matching stair parts as part of the order. When the floors are being refinished, the stairs are sanded and finished in the same sequence so the color is consistent.
Trim that frames the floor
Trim is carpentry, and it shows. Clean miters, tight joints, consistent reveals and properly set fasteners are what make the edges of a room disappear. We plan whether existing trim will be removed and reinstalled or replaced, and we talk through paint and caulking expectations up front, so the finish line is clear before the work begins.

What homeowners say
"I am so happy with my floors, they are beautiful! They take pride in their work. They showed up when they said they would and cleaned while they worked. All that is left were absolutely beautiful floors. I am very pleased and thankful for how good of a job they did! I will work with them again if I ever need to."
Laura Manzano · via Google "Bill from Vancouver Flooring Co., delivered a great carpet (Shaw) at a reasonable price. Was top notch communicable throughout the project and was always there to answer my questions. The crew he had do the install (Kevin and his crew) were just an extension of what Bill delivered. No hiccups and delivered on time. Can't say enough about Vancouver Flooring Co. It's so nice, especially now days to have a company with this integrity provide a 5 star install from beginning to end. Would highly recommend Vancouver Flooring Co. and Bill for all of your flooring needs."

Stairs & trim questions
Can my stairs be done to match new hardwood floors?
Usually, yes. We plan matching treads and nosings as part of the flooring order, or refinish existing wood stairs alongside the floors so the color and sheen match. We look at the existing stair structure before recommending an approach.
What is the difference between a wrapped and a waterfall carpet stair?
A wrapped style follows the shape of each nosing for a tailored, fitted look. A waterfall style drops the carpet straight over the nosing to the next tread. Both are common; the right one depends on the shape of your stairs and the look you prefer.
Should I add a runner to hardwood stairs?
A runner adds grip, comfort and quiet, and it protects the center of each tread where wear concentrates. Many homeowners like the combination of wood edges with a soft center. We can help choose the material, width and pattern.
Do new floors mean new baseboards?
Not always. Sometimes existing baseboards can be carefully removed and reinstalled; sometimes new trim suits the room or the new floor height better. We assess this during planning so it is part of the scope, not a surprise.
